Volunteer with the Bay Area Outreach and Recreation Program

A Berkeley based non-profit program is looking for volunteers for our hand cycle program. The Bay Area Outreach and Recreation Program (B.O.R.P.) is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving children and adults with disabilities active recreation and sport opportunities. Founded in 1976, B.O.R.P.’s innovative programs are designed to promote the health, academic performance, employability, self-confidence, and independence of its participants. The Cycling program established in 2004 is one of B.O.R.P.’s fastest growing recreation activities. Our Cycling program unlike other activities available provides our participant’s with a unique sense of independence, control, and speed. With a program design focused on organization and safety, the group rides are a perfect combination of the exercise, social, and exploration experiences. B.O.R.P.’s bike fleet is completely equipped with Child sized adapted trikes and hand cycles, Adult recumbent and hand cycles, and Tandems for people with visual impairments, so that everyone can ride and have fun.
The CYCLING PROGRAM of B.O.R.P. is an excellent opportunity to volunteer while doing something you know and enjoy. Volunteering with the mixed group (non-disabled and disabled) rides is a great way to play a role in providing an active, exciting and freeing experience to children and adults with disabilities; while you’re getting exercise, being outside, and meeting new people.
Skills/Qualifications:
• An interest in working in an active recreation setting
• An ability to ride a standard bicycle
• An interest and enthusiasm for working with children and/or adults with physical and/or visual disabilities
• Some basic bicycle knowledge preferred
• Previous experience in working with people with disabilities a plus
• Knowledge and experience with ‘biking in the Bay Area’ a big plus

To volunteer, and/or get more information about B.O.R.P., and its Cycling Program please contact: Nils Jorgensen, Cycling Program Coordinator at: 510-849-4663 x 306, or e-mail: nils@borp.org
